About this course
The course "E1201 – ISO 19650 Fundamentals" offers an introduction to BIM standards and the ISO 19650 series through a theoretical presentation. Students will learn what standards are, how they are organised at international, national and company level, and what the situation of BIM implementation is in Spain. The ISO 19650 series is then presented, along with the principles of information management: actors, information requirements, information models, the required level of information and the common data environment.
Course details
This course is aimed at architects, engineers, builders, asset managers and other construction sector professionals who wish to understand the international framework for information management in BIM. This module is part of SIMBIM's BIM fundamentals pathway (modules E11 and E12), a training centre accredited by buildingSMART. The requirements for professional certification are explained in module E11. The first lesson explains what standards are, the pyramid of international standards, national standards, public specifications and private standards, and reviews examples from the United Kingdom, the United States, Singapore and Chile, ending with the evolution of BIM implementation in Spain and the BIM Plan in public procurement. The second lesson presents the ISO 19650 series, its parts, its benefits and its fundamental concepts: the development phase and the operational phase, information model, information container, PIM, AIM and maturity stages. The third lesson develops the principles of information management: appointing party, lead appointed party and appointed party; information requirements (OIR, PIR, AIR and EIR); the required level of information; the information management cycle; the BIM execution plan, responsibility matrices, TIDP and MIDP; the common data environment and its states; control and approval; and an overview of the processes in part 2 of the standard. The course draws on concepts presented in module E11 (BIM, OpenBIM, IFC, BCF and federated models), which are referenced throughout several lessons.
Learning goals
- Understand what standards are and how international standards, national standards, public specifications and private standards relate to one another.

- Describe the evolution of BIM implementation in Spain and the structure, thresholds and levels of the BIM Plan in public procurement.
- Identify the parts of the ISO 19650 series and the benefits of its application.
- Distinguish between the concepts of information model, information container, PIM and AIM.
- Differentiate between the types of information requirements (OIR, PIR, AIR and EIR) and the required level of information.
- Explain the role of the BIM execution plan, responsibility matrices, the TIDP and the MIDP in the planning phase.
- Understand how the common data environment works, its four states, and the information control and approval mechanisms.
