About this course
The course "E1202 – Application of protocols and standards" delves into the practical application of the ISO 19650 series and the fundamentals of BIM implementation within an organisation. The first lesson examines the roles of appointing party, lead appointed party and appointed party, the activities of each stage of the information management cycle and the task-based roles, such as the BIM modeller and the BIM manager. The second lesson looks at the benefits of BIM implementation, maturity levels, planning elements and procedures, the main challenges and data security.
Course details
This course is aimed at architects, engineers, draughtspeople and other construction professionals who are already familiar with the concept of BIM and wish to understand how roles and responsibilities are organised in a project according to ISO 19650, and what implementing BIM in their company entails. Lesson 04 begins with a reflection on the concept of role, presents the three roles set out in ISO 19650 with examples according to who triggers the BIM work, goes through the activities of the appointing party, the lead appointed party and the appointed parties at each stage of the information management cycle (assessment of needs, invitation to tender and submission of tenders, appointment, mobilisation, production, delivery and end of the development phase), and describes the task-based roles and reference documents such as the Infraestructures.cat BIM manual, the guides of the esBIM commission and Chile's BIM Plan. Lesson 05 addresses the potential benefits of BIM, maturity levels, the six BIM planning elements from the Pennsylvania guide, strategic, implementation and procurement planning, the challenges of cost, data, skills and change management, and information security according to Part 5 of ISO 19650. At the close, the two case studies are described (one on the implementation of ISO 19650 in a company and another on an OpenBIM project), which are set out as preparatory exercises for the buildingSMART professional certification exam.
Learning goals
- Distinguish between the roles of appointing party, lead appointed party and appointed party defined in ISO 19650.
- Identify which role each agent occupies according to who triggers the BIM work in a project.
- Describe the activities of each stage of the information management cycle and the party responsible for each one.
- Relate the exchange information requirements (EIR) to the BIM execution plan (BEP) and the information delivery schedules.
- Recognise the usual functions of the BIM modeller and the BIM manager as task-based roles.
- Explain the origin of the benefits attributed to BIM implementation and the BIM maturity levels.
- Apply the six BIM planning elements and the strategic, implementation and procurement planning procedures.
- Identify the challenges of cost, data, skills and change management, and the information security risks involved in working with BIM.
