GRAPHISOFT BIM Manager with terminologies of Spanish regulations

Today, 1st June 2020, we are pleased to officially announce the availability of the GRAPHISOFT BIM Manager Program in the full Spanish language. This Spanish localisation covers the contents of all online-live tutoring and classes as well as support materials and certification exams (weekly questionnaires and final exam). In the original offer announced on 4th May 2020, the only live-online classes were presented in Spanish, and all other supporting materials and exams were planned to be in English. However, with coordinated efforts of BIM Manager program team at GRAPHISOFT HQ in Budapest and GRAPHISOFT Learn Center in Spain (SIMBIM Solutions), now this program is a 100% Spanish program. Still, in correspondence with the international nature of this certification program, students may alternatively request to receive the support materials and take the certification exams (weekly questionnaires and final exam) in English.

This change in the content happened to correspond to the existing series of reference BIM-related documents and terminologies within official and standardisation bodies of Spain. For example key ISO and CEN standard documents that are already localised and legalised in Spanish. Therefore, those accepted Spanish terminologies become vital aspects that a BIM Manager needs to take into account in Spanish AEC industry.

Our primary intention for doing this localisation is to support and promote the use of correct and accepted Spanish terminologies through the new certified BIM Managers in Spain. In this blog post, you can find some of our concerns that led to this localisation project:

BIM standards and implementation know-how

Based on our knowledge and experience on terminologies related to BIM standards, we concerned to not use “only” English BIM-related expressions in such an advanced BIM office and project management training contents. Also, we took into account that the BIM user communities in Spain are one of the fast-growing professional societies in Europe. Therefore, for the first Spanish edition of this international certification program, we became committed to implement and localise all the contents corresponding to standard terms and expressions in legal and professional bodies of Spain.

Below you can see a few samples of reference documents that have been used in such localisation efforts:

+ UNE-EN ISO 19650-1:2019

Organisation and digitisation of information about buildings and civil engineering works, including building information modelling (BIM) - Information management using building information modelling - Part 1: Concepts and principles (ISO 19650-1:2018)

+ UNE-EN ISO 19650-2:2019

Organisation and digitisation of information about buildings and civil engineering works, including building information modelling (BIM) - Information management using building information modelling - Part 2: Delivery phase of the assets (ISO 19650-2:2018)

+ Introduction to part 1 and 2 of ISO 19650 (buildingSMART Spain)

This document explains the main concepts included in Parts 1 and 2 of ISO 19650 propose to adopt such contents into the construction sector of Spain and its corresponding stakeholders.

+ Glossary of Terminologies (esBIM)

This document presents suggested terminologies related to building information modelling and developed by sub-working group 1.1 at BIM implementation Committee of Spain (ESBIM).

+ Defining Roles in BIM Processes (esBIM)

This document defines roles and responsibilities in a BIM project for built assets’ life cycle and developed by sub-working group 2.3 at the BIM implementation committee of Spain (ESBIM).

+ BIM Exceution Plan Preparation Guide (esBIM)

This document provides recommendations for the preparation of BIM Execution Plans (BEP) and developed by working group 3 at BIM implementation committee of Spain (ESBIM).

+ BIMAT Technical Guide (CGATE)

This guide, developed by the general council of technical architects of Spain (CGATE) with a focus on BIM workflow and techniques for usual work and requirements of technical architects.

+ BIM Guide for Asset Owners and Managers (buildingSMART Spain)

This document addresses issues related to BIM use cases with a perspective of asset owners and asset managers.

+ White paper about the strategic definition of BIM implementation at the local government of Catalunya

This publication took the contents developed by the “We built the Future” Commission at IteC (Institute of construction technology of Catalonia) as a reference. Currently, it serves as the primary source for BIM implementation in the Catalan administration.

Quality assurance and localisation consistency

For quality assurance reasons, the consistency of the used terminologies and expressions between different documents (course contents, handouts, exams) was a significant concern that could not be achieved in a simple translation and localisation workflow. For that, we have gone through the preparation of a centralised parametric terminology database that ensures consistency of the words, their meaning, and their adaptation to Spanish normative.
