Have you ever heard about OIR, AIR, PIR and EIR?

If you are working in any field related to BIM management, BIM modeling, or simply information or project coordination, then hopefully you know these terms are related to information management. In recent published ISO document about BIM (ISO 19650), the term “data” is replaced with the term “information” with many significant sub-terms to define tasks, roles, and responsibilities related to different types of information in AEC industry. Being an architect, engineer, project manager, etc. surely require us to deal with both production and processing of large variety of information related to building materials, site, construction requirements, environment, building components and elements. Of course, BIM software solutions (ARCHICAD, Revit, etc.) are here to help us to manage the information, but can we really manage all the required information by learning one or more BIM software? My answer is simply no, what is yours?

let’s go briefly through the information requirement that is explained in ISO 19650:

Information Requirement:

It is the same as required information to be able to do our job; Information requirement refer to set of data sheets to be filled by project stakeholders specifying details about building or construction information that should be clarified by answering to following questions:

  • What information should be produced or presented?
  • When this information should be produced or presented?
  • How this information should be produced or presented?
  • Who should produce or present this information and to whom it should be presented?

To be honest, thinking about how to answer these questions is not a complicated task and indeed this is what we are required to do in construction sector, but many times we do answer to all these questions with no clear procedure  on data collection, scheduling, responsibilities and delivery types. ISO 19650-1 has broken it down into different type of information to be able to clarify the tasks of collecting and processing the required information. Here I am going to explain 4 of these sub-terms for information requirement:

  1. OIR (Organizational information requirement) to clarify the organization needs, necessities and objectives,
  2. AIR (Asset information requirements) to be clear of all required assets, their management, and maintenance procedures,
  3. PIR (Project information requirement) to agree on what asset information should be delivered for each certain project,
  4. EIR (Exchange information requirement) to agree how to transfer the information, in what format, what level of information, and establishing a clear agreement among stakeholders on how and with what characteristics do they need to exchange their digital information.

So, as you see, these sub-terms are neither Greek nor Spanish and for sure not Chinese. They are simply different categories of required information that should be collected and to be processed during any construction project.
