Why Does the Mesh Object Appear in Wireframe Mode While the Rest of the Model Displays Solid in Archicad?
Target audience
Technical support engineers, BIM managers and advanced Archicad users responsible for resolving 3D window display issues.
Objective
The user has reported that the terrain mesh is displayed in wireframe mode in the 3D window, while the rest of the model is shown in solid mode. The objective is to restore the solid display of the mesh.
Possible causes and verification actions
The most common causes of this behaviour are detailed below, along with steps to identify and resolve them:
-
3D Style Configuration
- Go to Document → 3D Display → 3D Styles.
- Check that the active style uses “Shaded” or “Shaded with Shadows”, and not “Wireframe”.
- Make sure the “Mesh” category is set to display filled.
- Click OK to update.
-
Graphic Override Rules
- Go to View → Graphic Override.
- Check whether there is a rule forcing meshes to display in wireframe.
- Disable or edit the rule to allow solid fill on meshes.
- Update the 3D view to check the result.
-
Renovation Filters (Renovation)
- Go to Document → Renovation → Renovation Filter Options.
- Check whether the meshes have a renovation status that makes them display as wireframe.
- Adjust the filter or change the status to display the mesh in solid mode.
- Update the 3D view.
-
Layer Settings
- Go to Document → Layers → Layer Settings.
- Identify the mesh's layer and check whether it is set to wireframe mode.
- Change the layer display to “Solid” or “Default”.
- Validate the change in the 3D view.
-
Mesh Surface or Material
- Select the mesh and open the Settings dialog (Ctrl+T / Cmd+T).
- On the “Model” tab, check the surfaces assigned to faces and edges.
- Switch to the Surface Painter (“Design → Modify Surface”) and check that the surface is not transparent or missing.
- Reassign valid surfaces if necessary.
-
Active Marquee Tool
- Make sure there is no active marquee in the 3D view.
- If there is, press Esc or right-click and select Show All in 3D.
-
Surface Attribute Integrity
- Go to Options → Element Attributes → Surfaces.
- Look for the surface used by the mesh and check that it is not marked as “missing” or showing a placeholder image.
- Replace or reassign the textures if necessary.
- Rendering Engine Used
- Go to View → 3D View Options → 3D Styles.
- Change the rendering engine to “OpenGL” or “Internal Engine”.
- Click OK and reload the 3D window to check whether the mesh is displayed correctly.
Validation steps
- Copy the terrain mesh into a clean project to check its display.
- Compare the settings of the problematic mesh with another mesh that displays correctly.
- Use Ctrl+Shift+click on the mesh in the 3D view to quickly identify its layer and applied rules.
Consulting tips
Always use Ctrl+Shift+click to identify the source of the problem directly from the 3D view, avoiding the need to jump between multiple menus.
